gap between widely quoted TikTok views-per-minute estimates

TikTok doesn't publish how many videos are watched each minute. Widely quoted estimates differ by nearly 4×.

The famous '167 million TikTok videos watched every minute' comes from a 2021 marketing infographic. A 2026 roundup says 625 million. TikTok has confirmed neither, and nobody outside the company can say which is closer.

Here is a number you have probably seen: TikTok users watch 167 million videos every minute. It turns up in listicles, pitch decks and explainers.

It comes from Domo, a business-software company whose annual "Data Never Sleeps" infographic estimates what happens online in a single minute. The TikTok figure appeared in its 2021 edition.

Search for it today and you will also find 625 million — in a January 2026 roundup by the marketing firm LocaliQ, which describes it as up from 167 million "just two years ago". The 167 million figure was more than four years old by then.

Neither number comes from TikTok.

TikTok does not publish how many videos are watched on it each minute. Domo's announcement does not say how its TikTok figure was worked out. LocaliQ cites no source at all.

So the two numbers are not a clean comparison. They are more than four years apart, from different publishers, and may have been estimated in completely different ways. Some of the gap may be real growth; some may be method. Nobody outside TikTok can separate the two.

What is certain is that both are still being quoted as fact — and one is nearly four times the other.

The number TikTok does have to publish.

Under the European Union's Digital Services Act, very large online platforms must publish how many people use them in the EU. TikTok's latest report puts it at 189 million people a month across the EU for January to June 2026.

That is a different measure — people, not views — and it covers only one region. But it is the kind of figure TikTok is legally required to state, which is why it can be quoted with far more confidence than anything per minute.

What isn't in doubt is the mechanism.

TikTok's For You Page doesn't care what you say you like. It watches what you actually do — every pause, every rewatch, every scroll speed, every share. It learns from revealed behaviour, not stated preferences. If you pause on a cooking video three seconds longer than a travel video, the algorithm notices and adjusts.

The result is a feed with no natural endpoint. There is always another video. The scroll never runs out. There is no bottom of the page.

The scroll is real. The famous number attached to it is a guess.
